I discovered Garden Lites Zucchini Souffle in the Hannaford organic section a few weeks ago.  They caught my eye for 2 reasons – there is 2 servings of vegetables per egg white based soufflé and are 140 calories each.  I decided to pick out two of them to try; I selected the Zucchini Soufflé and the Spinach Soufflé.  As someone who tries to eat on the healthier side but gets very hungry, these were appealing to me for the size.  They are a 7 oz. weight and my thought is that it would make a perfect lunch with a small fruit or vegetable side to compliment it.

First thing that is misleading about these soufflés, while found in the organic section, they are NOT organic!  They are however Gluten, Lactose, and Nut free.  Garden Lite does claim to be “minimally processed and maximally delicious” according to their website.   My judgment of them was more of them on the minimally delicious side.  The soufflé is able to be microwaved (or oven cooked if you have 40 minutes), and in a quick 5 minutes I had myself a moist flavorless lunch that looked nothing like picture on the box.  Their packaging indicates one of the products in both soufflés is onion powder, and that is all I was able to taste.  When cooked, a crust is formed around the edge that is a bit tough to try and cut through with just a fork, the inside is fluffy and juicy.  I was not able to find out if the Garden Lites lived up to their statement of being a very filling food with being loaded with protein (9 grams) and fiber (3 grams). I was unable to make it all the way through either soufflé due to the terrible flavor.  They were tossed into the garbage, even with being the lunch time joke of my office of “What the heck is that you’re eating?!”

The cost of Garden Lites is $2.99 per soufflé.  In my opinion, this is a bit pricy for a dish that doesn’t live up to the assertion of being a tasty and nutritious option.  It is also loaded with 320 mg of sodium.  Garden Lites are not a repeat.  For now I will continue to stick with Healthy Choice Steamers for lunch time healthy options.

Update:

After initially posting this, we received a contact from Julie at Garden Lites asking if she could ship us some products to try and potentially sway our opinion on their products.  Julie generously overnighted us a large variety of over 20 frozen meals to try, some of them being flavors that aren’t carried at our local Hannaford.  We distributed them and received back diverse opinions on them, and some really creative ways that these foods could be used to make filling meals.  We had someone recommend putting the soufflés in a wrap with some salsa for a satisfying breakfast.  We had another that made a crumbly crust with crackers for a bit more flavor.  Eric enjoyed the zucchini marinara, indicating that the sauce was very flavorful.

Julie also sent us a very cool reusable bag, which we always love!  Thanks to Julie for all the samples and to Garden Lite for standing by their products!  We look forward to trying Garden Lites in the future as they release more products.
